Frequently Asked Questions About Ultrasound Services:
What is an ultrasound?
An ultrasound is a safe procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce a live stream of images in the body. Due to safe and reliable nature, it is the preferred method of imaging for pregnancy and other soft-tissue organs in the body.
How does an ultrasound work?
After being called back for your exam, a technologist will give you a gown to change into and have you lie down on a comfortable exam bed. Using a jelly as a conductor for the sound waves, the tech will then rub a smooth tool, called a transducer, across the exam location to produce the live images that will appear on a screen. These images will be used to create a report that will be sent to your doctor to aid in a diagnosis for your health.
The procedure generally lasts less than 30 minutes and after, the gel will be cleaned off your skin, and you will be able to return to normal activity as directed by your physician.
Is an ultrasound safe?
An ultrasound is completely safe; safe enough to even examine an unborn baby on a pregnant mother. It uses no radiation or any other potentially harmful rays. Ultrasounds use sound waves that produce an echo as they hit organs and bones. These waves and echoes generate the image that appears on the screen. This image will then be sent to a radiologist who will generate a report that is sent to your doctor.
What are the benefits of an ultrasound?
Ultrasounds are safe, painless, and a reliable method of diagnosing many internal ailments. They are also generally less expensive than other diagnostic imaging and can tell you much about soft organs and not just bone.
What should you expect during an ultrasound exam?
Because food digestion will also produce an echo, depending upon the exam, you may be advised to fast for several hours before to ensure a proper image. The receptionist or technician will explain this when scheduling your appointment.
An ultrasound exam is performed in less than 30 minutes with minimal, if any, discomfort.
Depending upon on the body part, you may be asked to change into a gown, and lie back on a table.
